Wonder what it'll turn out to be; 4 years of hard work.

Come to think of it, it doesn't really make much sense to judge one's capabilities and hard work for 4 years just by one major exam. A dedicated student becoming despondent on 11 Jan after knowing the outcome. Or maybe, one of the opposite turning into an ace student, just by a stroke of luck. Just wait and see what fate throws you into.

But then again, you can argue that fate can be worked against. All the hard work and effort, why should one succumb to fate? Why should one be victim to something that cannot even be proven to exist physically?

All in all, it's what we choose to believe in and how we choose to act upon the outcome, which will eventually be revealed, after 4 years of waiting.

Look to the brighter side.

do remember to bask in the sun for at least 30 minutes a day to absorb that Vitamin D and to get that wonderful tan that everyone hopes for.
This beats working underground and inhaling all that dust hands down, which will eventually lead to bronchitis. :O

The world can be seen in greater detail, at a greater depth and with a wider perspective.

We mostly assume things to be the way we want them to be. Why not adopt a different angle in the way you look at the different issues faced everyday? Broader perspectives.

I'm not sure if this applies to everyone, or just people of my age. We often fail to decipher the complexity, or should I say, the deeper meaning of our daily interactions. It is then that we miss out on the beauty of the simplest things in life, which can indeed, bring great joy and even enlightenment.

These details of the life we so plainly live everyday should not be neglected, missed or looked over. These are the details which can most probably enrich our minds- to up our level of understanding of the things going on in the world, or, on a smaller scale, in our lives.

Dive deeper into that pool of wonder.

Trailer looks good and
excitement is in the air.
That is before you watch the movie itself.
Let's just say the book was a hundred times better!

The cinematic effects were awesome, detailed and natural but unfortunately, the plot itself (which has been modified in the movie) did not complement such amazing effects.

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Sequence of events had not much of a link and many major parts of the book were missing! Sad to say, even the climax disappeared, which we had all been anticipating. Ie the fight against the Death Eaters. Even Dumbledore didn't seem to be that significant as he should have been.

Disappointed like shit.

Everything was wronggggggggggggg.

There was too much focus on things that weren't as significant or relevant, for example, Lavender Brown's infatuation with Ron -.- Btw, Snape's proclamation as the Half Blood Prince was the lamest thing on earth omg.

So many missing parts, so little emphasis.

A rant of my disappointment.

Yet, another highly anticipated film awaits!

Pages, pages and more pages of pictures that burst with so much color, excitement and life. Vivid images of our happiness were frozen in time, captured with every single click of the shutter. Yet these pictures never came to a stand still, as perceived by others who are unable to comprehend our elation. The entire scene plays out before our very eyes once again. We smile, we remember.

Amazing isn't it. How much pictures can really say, how much they can really make our day.

WOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH~ These few days were like the highlights of our school life. The exhilaration, laughter and more hysterical laughter! Madness. Pure madness, which has somehow or another, been transformed to bliss. Bliss achieved after thousands of tests/mocks. (More to come though) But still, it was really an escapade. THANK GOODNESS FOR PEOPLE LIKE THE ONES IN 4G1. ^~^ The source of our happiness and one of the few reasons I go to school for.

Special week this week. So, no lessons! Had learning journey on monday, which was awesome (minus the tour guide), 3 mock exams today, courses to boost our academic excellence in the next few days. And more slots for mad laughter in between ^~^

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

A story of a life being told from back to front. A film brimming with emotions and literature.

It was indeed an amazing movie (and story). Dated back in the 1918s-2003, we get the chance to view the world back then, when everything was cast in historical monuments. The setting, characters (minor ones like people walking by the streets and the main ones like Benjamin, his Momma and Daisy) and the way of life brought about clearly how the past was meant to be. How people lived in what we consider as a monotonous life now. However, on the contrary, people back then lived lives more fruitful than ours. Their lives revolved around one another and relationships were bound by the love they felt for every other being.

Benjamin Button, as his name suggests, was born to a rather wealthy family who ruled the button industry back then. His mother died at childbirth on the day America was liberated from war. Infuriated by the misfortune Benjamin has brought upon his mother, Mr Button was determined to end Benjamin's life in the beginning, but thought better of it. Benjamin was left on the steps of an old folks' home, helpless and abandoned. It was then that Queenie saved Benjamin from the wallows of misery.

And so Benjamin started off with his life. Growing (physically) from old to young. It's something that you'd marvel at, watching him 'grow' from an withering old man to a man in his dashing 30s, to a gangly, (but still breathtakingly beautiful) 17 year old, to a child and finally to an infant, when yet again, he has lost all ability to be fully aware of his surroundings.

People left this world and aged while he blossomed into his youth. It was sad in a way, watching people leave and yet you stayed on. This was especially so when Benjamin and the love of his life belong to two completely different age groups. Yes, it was difficult to relate to one another, but the love that they both mutually shared knitted them together, unwavering no matter the circumstances.

It was amazing to be so absorbed in the film. It was really a masterpiece. Emotions were literally flooding out from the damn screen, which obviously barricades you entirely from experiencing the true feelings of the characters back then. Nonetheless, they tug at your heartstrings and you couldn't help but be intrigued.

Factors which trigger your emotions are not based entirely on one sole literary device- speech. The way everyone revolves around another, how they are linked as one by their love, their inner thoughts, their expressions, the setting, how they reminisce the past and even their every move bursts with emotions.

Every single detail sings with joy that is out of this world. These joys may be simple, but yet we cannot help but smile foolishly at our screens, only hoping in vain that we'd ever be fortunate enough to experience it. And as always, sorrow is dispelled, evoking sympathy towards the ones drowning in misery.

This is one of the rare films which is really worthy of your emotions.
So much wisdom,
So many heartfelt moments.

As the scenes before you flicker to life,
get ready to be amazed.
Listen to their conversations carefully and you'll be glued to your seats instantly.

A buzz of activities, a spectacular scene.

Chinese New Year at Chinatown: An annual bonanza!

We could hardly walk through the throng of people moving at around 0.1cm/min? There were people everywhere. They flood the streets, crowd in shops, speak at the top of their lungs and snap pictures with their SLRs, while I attempted to capture that moment of high spirits with my pathetic camera.

With CNY songs blasting through the air and golden lights hanging from above, you couldn't help but join in the celebration.

Excitement radiated out from every single being. It was as if the entire Chinatown purred in anticipation, awaiting the start of the lunar new year.

Energy surged through each dark alley and every street. Its source: Our jubliation. Chinatown is alight with our excitement. The lights protested against the dark night, willing the darkness to disappear. And then they set the sky ablaze with vibrant streaks of colours.

Happy CNY!

The times we spent together making those cny decorations were the highlights of our life in 2009 so far, what with peals of laughter and grins of exuberance. The satisfaction of seeing our masterpiece after all the hard work was beyond words. We worked from the break of dawn (literally) to dusk. Yet never did we complain or moan. Everything was done with outmost sincerity and the result was a clear mirage of our dedication to the class.

It's our last year together, and there has been a good start. So good, that we all crave for more.

What with 1305 word essays, tests, homework, new year/ class deco!

Ferrari unveils the new F60.

Ferrari have become the first team to officially launch their 2009 car after unveiling the F60 online. It is the machine that will be driven by Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen as they defend the Italian squad's 2008 constructors' title.

In line with revisions to the Formula One regulations for 2009, the F60 features a lower, wider front wing and a taller, narrower rear wing. Its name commemorates what will be Ferrari’s 60th F1 campaign.

The F60 is the 55th single-seater produced by Ferrari to contest the world championship and it will make its track debut on Monday afternoon at the team's Mugello circuit, with Massa behind the wheel.

The new car has far fewer aerodynamic appendages on its bodywork compared to its predecessor, due to the rule changes designed to cut downforce and promote more overtaking, with the driver now able to make minor front wing adjustments from the cockpit. The F60’s suspension and layout has also been completely reconfigured as a result, in order to maintain optimum weight distribution.

The F60’s design also takes into account two other major rule changes - the return of slick tyres and the option to use a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Ferrari’s KERS has been designed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli and is centrally mounted on the engine under the rear part of the chassis.

The car’s seven-speed transmission has been redesigned to optimise its aerodynamic efficiency, while Ferrari’s Type 056 V8 has been modified in accordance with the new ruling that requires engines to last for three Grand Prix meetings from 2009, with rev limits cut from 19,000 to 18,000 rpm.

Massa, who missed out on the world title to Britain's Lewis Hamilton on the final corner of the final race in Brazil last season, was the first to test the 2009 Ferrari model - successor to the F2008 - which has been radically adapted to comply with new International Automobile Federation (FIA) stipulations aimed at encouraging overtaking.

"I feel emotional but I'm also happy to take it out on track for the first time," said the Brazilian.

"With all the new rules I was expecting a different type of car, like 10 years ago with big wings so I was surprised.

"The new F60 seems tiny, very compact and cute."

The car is named F60 in reference to the number of championships Ferrari have participated in and becomes the 55th different F1 car designed by the Italian manufacturer.

Most of the design changes have been imposed by the FIA in order to increase overtaking in a sport often lacking in excitement due to the difficulties in passing the car in front.

Massa took the F60 for a spin around the famous Mugello circuit just outside Florence with Ferrari having changed the original location from Fiorano, their usual test track near their base at Maranello close to Bologna, due to icy conditions there.

It is Ferrari and McLaren, though, who are expected to lead from the front again this season and Massa says he is ready to try to go one better than last season, when only a single point separated him from Hamilton following the Briton's late overtaking of Timo Glock in Brazil.

"Every year you feel stronger, better prepared psychologically and physically," said Massa.

"But I feel stronger from the point of view of experience. I feel ready for a great battle.

"Right now it's difficult to say who will be the main rivals but for sure McLaren will make life the most difficult but there's also BMW, Renault and maybe other surprises.

"We don't know how good the Ferrari will be, we've worked very hard but there's still a long way to go before the first race."

The new F1 season opens in Melbourne on March 29 with the Australian Grand Prix, which last year was won by eventual world champion Lewis Hamilton.

And a short escapade from everything else happening on earth. It just blows you away, takes you off to another world. It's secluded, with not many people being aware of its existence. Which is great, actually. Gives you time to relax, think, reflect in appreciated silence.

But too bad the clouds had to turn stormy. They were practically chasing after me. Groan. So had to leave not long after. Nevermind, another day! ;D

Yup, so actually it's time to start your engines. Vrooooooooom.

The feeling at the end of it all when you get your reward is one of the best in the world.

Wow, another epic drama has just ended. The well received Little Nonya has just completed its awesome story.

As one of the channel 8 dramas with the highest viewership in the past decade, this was a definite success.

Enriched with the Peranakan culture, Little Nonya was definitely an eye opener to many. The culture has all along been there, but we were just a little too oblivious to it. There's actually not really much of a need to elaborate about the storyline since I'm sure many of you were glued to your tv sets every single night from 9-10pm!

It's amazing how much we are all so influenced by one single drama series, considering that it's a mediacorp production (no pun intended). People flock to bookstores, groping at whatever nonya recipe books available, apparently trying to make an attempt to cook a specific kind of nonya dish inspired by the show, eg Babi Ponteh. We suddenly take an interest to the Peranakan culture, which to us, has long been forgotten. Those of Peranakan culture are intrigued by their profound history, and are spurred on by this growing interest to relieve their culture. Some are even inspired to put on a suit of Baju Kebaya during the festive season!

It's great, knowing that people are taking a greater interest to their own culture, and cherishing their ancestral origin. After all, it is how you became to be. A person without a past is just as good as someone without a soul. The media is powerful, as shown. It not only provides entertainment to rid you of stress from work/school, it influences you and meddles with your thoughts. In this particular show, many emotions were sought out. Anger towards the villain, sympathy towards Yuenaing/Juxiang, admiration towards their nobility, a sense of desperation towards Yuzhu, etc. They quicken your heartbeat and calm your senses. Amazing isn't it. Taking into consideration that all these are being portrayed within an hour or so, and viewed through a piece of glass. So who's up for the roles of the scriptwriter and actress/actor?

Although none of these events actually exactly happen in real life, they relate quite closely to us. One aspect would be Family. Bear no grudges, forgive and forget. Because they are after all, the ones who would stick with you through thick and thin, the ones who would offer you help when you are in need. They know you inside out and vice versa. Who else would? You are like an open book to them, so susceptible to their love.

Nothing beats returning to a warm and inviting home, where every breath you take contains at least a fragment of the love from your family.

Amazing show, wasn't it?

Superb Davydenko Sends Murray Crashing

ATP World No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko produced a superb semifinal display to send Andy Murray crashing out 7-5, 6-2 and reach the final of Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai on Saturday.

"Murray wanted to show everyone here he is the best player because he beat Federer. He wanted to beat Federer. And maybe, maybe he is really tired for today," said Davydenko afterwards. "Recovery in 24 hours after a three hour match is very difficult. If he lost the tiebreak in the second set (against Federer) he would have more chance to recover today."

The right-hander is chasing his fourth ATP title of the season to add to victories at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami (d. Nadal), Poertschach (d. Monaco) and Warsaw (d. Robredo). The top Russian has an impressive 14-4 career mark in ATP finals and stands on a 56-20 match record for the season.

Dunblane native Murray closes his season on a 58-16 match record, having won a British Open Era record five ATP titles at Doha (d. Wawrinka), Marseille (d. Ancic), Masters Series Cincinnati (d. Djokovic), Masters Series Madrid (d. Simon) and St. Petersburg (d. Golubev). The right-hander also reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, where he defeated World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals before losing to Federer in the championship match.

"I was just very happy with the way I played (this week) in the matches that I could have done," said Murray. "The year as a whole has been awesome. At the end of last year, if someone would have told me I was going to be No. 4 in the world, won the matches I had done, be to in my first slam final, beating Federer three times, I would have taken that. I hope I can build on it next year."

Murray Edges Federer In Thriller

World No. 4 Andy Murray beat four-time champion Roger Federer for the third time this year on Friday to top the Red Group with a 3-0 record at Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai.Murray is the third player to defeat Federer at least three times in a season, joining Rafael Nadal and David Nalbandian. Nadal posted four wins in 2006 and 2008 and Nalbandian three wins in 2003.

"I won't know how much it's taken out of me till tomorrow," said Murray. "It was a great match… so many sort of twists and turns. The first set was relatively straight forward for him. But the second and third set, [you] kind of never knew what was going to happen. I was glad I pulled it out."

Federer and Murray didn't fail to disappoint in the most eagerly awaited match of the week. Federer began serve-volleying to keep Murray on his toes. The Swiss superstar broke his opponent's serve to love for a 3-1 lead, when Murray hit a forehand long of the baseline.

Murray broke back immediately, but Federer maintained the pressure and clinched the first set with a second service break to love in the 10th game. Murray missed a drop shot to give Federer the opening set in 44 minutes. While Murray won 75 per cent of first service points, the right-hander won only 21 per cent of points on his second delivery.

Murray launched a counter-attack and broke the Federer serve in the opening game of the second set. The Scot extended his lead to 5-2, when Federer hit two double faults and hit a half volley wide of the court. Federer survived two set points in the eighth game and went on to break Murray, after the 21 year old hit a backhand wide.

Murray recovered from 0-40 at 5-4, despite the crowd and Federer's efforts to unnerve him. But Federer was not to be denied. The former World No. 1 leveled the score-line, before winning his fourth game in a row with a service hold to love for a 6-5 lead. At the change of ends Murray sent two racquets to be re-strung, confident the match would go to a deciding set. He was right.

Murray won four points on the Federer serve in the tie-break and made it one-set all after one hour and 44 minutes, after Federer hit a backhand long of the baseline. During the interval, Federer received treatment for a back and hip complaint.

The deciding set began with Murray holding serve to love, as Federer moved around the court gingerly. When Murray took a 2-0 lead, courtesy of a Federer backhand in the net, it looked as if the Swiss might retire for the first time in 766 career matches. Federer sat on a line-judges chair before play resumed. Murray needed to save one break point for a 3-0 lead.

Three games to love became 3-3, as Federer combined superb service placement with groundstroke winners to stage one of his great recoveries. Every point became a championship point and the pressure began to tell on both players. Once again, Federer won four games in a row to take a 4-3 lead but Murray made it 4-4 when Federer missed a smash on his third break point opportunity.

Minutes later Murray held two match points with Federer serving at 15-40. Both points passed with Murray hitting a backhand long of the baseline and striking a forehand into the net. As Federer continued to struggle to hit a first serve into court, Murray set up a third match point after Federer mishit a backhand. Federer worked Murray around the court and eventually hit a forehand winner down the line for deuce.

A fourth and fifth match point went begging, much to Murray's frustration. Two further match points were saved with Federer aces. Moments later the Swiss exploded in celebration upon leveling the score-line at 5-5.

Murray regained his composure tol hold serve to 15 for a 6-5 lead, before he set up two match points with a forehand pass that Federer could only frame wide. Murray clinched his 58th victory of a career-best year, when Federer struck a groundstroke long of the baseline. He now leads Federer 4-2 in their career series.

"It was tough after that game," explained Murray. "Where I had all the chances. But he played some great, great tennis to save most of them. But I was having more of the chances than him. I just had to try and stay focused, because I felt like I had the upper hand at that stage. [I] stayed mentally tough and broke him the next game."

As the only player unbeaten at the prestigious circuit finale, Murray could earn $1.34 million if he wins the Tennis Masters Cup title on Sunday. He has already won five trophies, including two ATP Masters Series shields in 2008.

Federer, who dropped to 66-15 on the season, commented on how he thought the year had gone. He said: "It was a good season. I was happy I could win the US Open for the fifth straight [time]. I'm looking forward to next year, to go for six. It was an incredible match at Wimbledon. [I had] very emotional victories in Basel, my hometown… and winning the Olympic gold for Switzerland was a big moment for me. [It was] tough to start off with [and] tough to end."

The 27-year-old Federer was making his seventh consecutive appearance at the Tennis Masters Cup (27-5 record). He captured the title in 2003 (d. Agassi), ’04 (d. Hewitt), ’06 (d. Blake) and ’07 (d. Ferrer). He had been attempting to join Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras as a five-time titlist at the circuit finale.

This year, the Swiss superstar won four titles at Estoril (d. Davydenko), Halle (d. Kohlschreiber), US Open (d. Murray) and Basel (d. Nalbandian). He also finished runner-up at ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo (l. to Nadal), ATP Masters Series Hamburg (l. to Nadal), Roland Garros (l. to Nadal) and Wimbledon (l. to Nadal).

At ATP Masters Series Madrid, he became the all-time leader in career prize money (surpassing Sampras) with over $43 million.

Heartbroken Massa gracious in defeat
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa put in the drive of his life at Interlagos on Sunday, doing everything within his power to become 2008 world champion. And as he took the chequered flag he, his team and his family all thought he had done it.

But jubilation rapidly turned to disbelief as just seconds later title rival Lewis Hamilton passed the Toyota of Timo Glock at the final corner to clinch the fifth place he needed to snatch the drivers’ crown from Massa’s grasp. The Brazilian knew how close he had come, but had nothing but praise for the McLaren driver.

"It was an exciting day,” he said. “We did everything to perfection and we almost managed to pull it off. Then, as I crossed the line, (race engineer) Rob (Smedley) told me that Hamilton had finished fifth and therefore he took the title by one point. Sport is like this and one has to accept that. Congratulations to Lewis: whoever gets the most points deserves the title.”

Massa’s only consolation was a magnificent home win, and the knowledge that he and team mate Kimi Raikkonen, who finished third, had done enough to guarantee Ferrari the constructors’ championship.

“I am very proud of the whole team and how much support they have given me during this fantastic season,” he said. “Now we must be happy with what have done, namely bringing home the constructors' title which I know is so important for the team.

“It was a season of highs and lows and we have learned a lot, from the good moments and from our mistakes. I can leave Interlagos with my head held high because once again I have won in front of my home crowd and because this is an unforgettable day. Now I want to celebrate with my family, my friends and my team. We deserve it!"

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali paid tribute to Massa, commenting: “Felipe has grown so much, year after year, demonstrating his talent and personality, answering his critics with his driving and with his mind. He has had an amazing season and would have deserved the title. That's sport, it can sometimes be cruel.”

Massa deserves our admiration. And he would definitely show the world what he's got next year. You should have seen what happened just this morning. Everyone in the ferrari garage, the crowd and Massa himself were cheering for the hard earned victory. Suddenly they looked at the screen and realised that Hamilton went up to 5th. You should have seen their expressions. The triumphant smiles turned into looks of disappointment. Massa's once pumping arms dropped down to his sides, almost immediately. It was heartbreaking, really, when we all saw him tearing later at the podium.

But he wasn't the sore loser, demanding for a review of what had happened. He smiled, promising us a new year with every ounce of his best effort.

Go Massa, you're what a real sportsman should be. Whether in Formular 1 or not.

Massa on pole for Brazilian Grand Prix

Local hero Felipe Massa of Ferrari grabbed pole for Sunday's championship showdown at the Brazilian Grand Prix with a dazzling lap in a dramatic and hotly-contested qualifying session.

Massa, who trails Lewis Hamilton by seven points in the title race, clocked a best time of one minute and 12.368 seconds in the third and final part of Saturday's session.

McLaren's Hamilton, who needs to finish in the top five to become the youngest and first black champion in F1 history, qualified fourth behind Massa, Italian Jarno Trulli in his Toyota and outgoing world champion Finn Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari.

Trulli split the two Ferraris with a dramatic last-gasp lap that forced Raikkonen down a place and wrecked the Italian team's hopes of an all-scarlet front row.

It was Massa's sixth pole position of the season, his third in succession at Interlagos and the 15th of his career.

Hamilton's team-mate, Finn Heikki Kovalainen, qualified fifth ahead of two times champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso of Renault.

German Sebastian Vettel was seventh for Toro Rosso ahead of compatriot Nick Heidfeld in a BMW Sauber, Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais in the second Toro Rosso and another German Timo Glock for Toyota.

On a warm, sunny day with vastly-improved conditions following Friday's cold and wet weather, the session began slowly with Nelson Piquet venturing out first in his Renault to give his compatriots something to cheer.

Once the real action began, there were roars of approval for Massa and boos for Hamilton as the big crowd packed into the basin-like arena of Interlagos revelled in the atmosphere.

Hamilton was quick to set a fastest time and the two Ferrari men, led by Massa had to wait until the final minutes to overhaul him. Massa's lap in 1:11.830 was the fastest of the weekend at that time.

Hamilton was obviously content to sit most of the session out and take third, but it was farewell to the five at the bottom with Japanese Kazuki Nakajima and his Williams team-mate German Nico Rosberg both eliminated along with the two Force India's of German Adrian Sutil and Italian Giancarlo Fisichella and Briton Jenson Button of Honda whose car stopped out on the circuit.

In the second part-session, the McLarens showed they were in command again when after Hamilton clocked his best effort in 1:11.856 to top the standings, he was beaten by his team-mate Kovalainen's 1:11.768.

Massa was third-fastest and stayed in the Ferrari garage as the young German tyro Sebastian Vettel flew to second for Toro Rosso in the final seconds, shifting Hamilton to third ahead of Massa.

This final flurry saw some shuffled places and out went Piquet, Australian Mark Webber of Red Bull and his team-mate Briton David Coulthard, who retires after Sunday's race, struggling Pole Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber and Rubens Barrichello of Honda.

This condemned the veteran Brazilian, Barrichello, who was born within a short walk of the Interlagos track, to a disappointing grid position in what could also be his final race if, as suspected, he is replaced at Honda next season by compatriot Bruno Senna, nephew of the late Ayrton Senna.

Dominant Hamilton closes in on the title
Lewis Hamilton completely dominated the 56-lap Chinese Grand Prix to inch closer to the world championship on a day when Ferrari and Felipe Massa simply had no answer to the pace of the leading McLaren Mercedes. Heading to the season finale in Brazil, Hamilton leads the championship by seven points from Massa who was this afternoon gifted second position by Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton launched into the lead from pole position and quickly established a three second lead from the chasing Raikkonen. Running third, Massa dropped away to 15 seconds behind Hamilton by the first round of pit stops, a gap that the McLaren driver would manage to the chequered flag....

Hamilton’s fifth victory of the season at Shanghai International Circuit also marks the fifth straight winner at this venue. As Hamilton celebrates his most dominant win of the season, Ferrari can only look back on this even and admit they simply did not have the pace with the F2008 package. The silver lining is that extend the lead from McLaren in the constructors’ championship to 11 points.

Raikkonen chased Hamilton hard in the first stint of the race, but lap by lap lost a little ground. Massa ran third until the closing stages of the race when Raikkonen backed off and allowed his team-mate through into second position. That pretty much is the story of the Chinese Grand Prix, a race as devoid of incident and accident as the Japanese Grand Prix a week ago was full of it.

Fernando Alonso started and finished in fourth position in the leading Renault, battling ahead of Heikki Kovalainen on the long back straight on the first lap to regain the position. Alonso’s points streak now moves him ahead of the ever-unfortunate Kovalainen in the championship as the Finn saw his hopes of finishing fifth dashed as he picked up a front right puncture on lap 36 and dropped down to 17th position before opting to retire the McLaren.

Nick Heidfeld led home BMW Sauber team-mate Robert Kubica to claim the fifth position. Kubica now has 75 points and drops out of the championship chase on a weekend when the F1.08 package simply did not have the pace of the ever-improving Renault or the top two teams in the sport. The decision to focus on 2009 for the second half of the season has been costly for BMW Sauber.

Timo Glock used a one stop strategy well to claim two championship points for Toyota. It was largely a disappointing day for the German-based squad as Jarno Trulli, starting from seventh, turned in on Sebastien Bourdais at the first turn and eliminated himself from the race. Bourdais himself was pushed back down the order and would take the chequered flag in 13th position after a strong recovery drive.

Nelson Piquet claimed the final point in the second Renault after using the more traditional two-stop strategy, albeit with a very long first stint. After starting sixth, it was a disappointing race from Sebastian Vettel who finished ninth in his Toro Rosso Ferrari, eight seconds behind Piquet’s Renault.

Red Bull Renault leave Shanghai with no points as well. David Coulthard ran a one stop strategy to finish tenth while Mark Webber’s aggressive fuel strategy in qualifying compromised his race and the Australian finished 14th in the sister RB4.

Rubens Barrichello does not have a very good car in the Honda RA108, but the Brazilian veteran drove a very strong race to finish 11th while team-mate Jenson Button finished his low-key weekend down in 16th position. Barrichello is fighting for his future in Formula One and based on recent events, he is the stronger of the two Honda drivers.

It was a pretty rotten weekend for the Williams Toyota team. Kazuki Nakajima made best of a one strop strategy to finish 12th from 17th on the grid while the reverse was true for team-mate Nico Rosberg on his two stop strategy. Starting 14th, the Singapore Grand Prix runner-up actually lost a position and finished a disappointing 15th.

Giancarlo Fisichella had a lonely race at the back of the field following the early retirement of Force India Ferrari team-mate Adrian Sutil. Something of a mobile chicane for the race leaders, Fisichella finished a lap down on Hamilton and 48 seconds behind 16th placed Button.

Hamilton may have the advantage heading to Brazil as he enjoys a seven point advantage in the championship. But it is still far from over, as this was the very same advantage he took to the season finale last year. And we all know what happened on that particular day...

Massa Refuses to blame crew
FERRARI world title contender Felipe Massa had a disastrous Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday but refused to blame the mechanic who ruined his race.
The Brazilian, ahead of rival Lewis Hamilton at the time after 15 laps, was given the green light to leave the pits but the fuel hose was still attached as he accelerated away, spraying petrol and knocking over one of the pit crew.

Massa ended up sitting in his Ferrari at the end of the pit lane as the crew frantically ran after him and managed to pull the hose free.

But he was given a drive-through penalty for almost hitting another car as he drove away and rejoined in 18th place, ending any hope he had of making the points.

Despite the disaster, he was philosophical.

'We could have finished first and second and it could have been different,' he said as he slipped seven points behind Hamilton in the drivers' standings with three races left after the Briton finished third.

'We are all human beings, everyone makes mistakes. I am not the sort of person who goes to a guy and fights with him.'

It was a race to forget for Ferrari with defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen failing to finish after ramming his car into the barriers with just four laps left.

'A black day, there's little else today. We are very disappointed but that doesn't mean we are downtrodden,' Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali told reporters, brushing aside suggestions the mechanic would be reprimanded.

'You try to be quick, try to find the right slot for the car to be released,' he said.

'It is a difficult moment. We have to have a lot of respect for these guys, who are not top drivers but are part of us.'

Title hopes over: Kimi
KIMI Raikkonen has conceded that any hope he had of defending his world title has evaporated after his disastrous Singapore Grand Prix.
The Ferrari star finished outside the points for his fourth consecutive race after ramming his car into the barriers with just four laps left when he was in fifth.

It leaves the Finn 27 points adrift of leader Lewis Hamilton with three races to go.

'It was a pretty small chance anyhow,' he said of his title chances.

'I'm not sad for my fifth place but I'm sorry for the team to lose those points. But for sure we'll try to do better next race.'

Raikkonen has not won a race since the Spanish Grand Prix in April and the last time he scored any championship points was at Germany in July, when he finished sixth.

But his position at Ferrari is guaranteed after signing a new contract and he vowed to do all he could to help the team win the constructors' title.

'I am not used to giving up and I will do my very best to try and help the team reach its targets,' he told reporters.

With teammate Felipe Massa also finishing outside the points, there is every chance that Raikkonen will be under orders to help the Brazilian in his bid to win the drivers' title.

Massa is seven points behind McLaren's Hamilton.

'I know what the team wants - they want to win the world championship,' he said.

'We will see what happens. I'm trying to win races too and we will see what happens. I'm out of the championship anyhow.'

He added that he crashed as he tried to pass Timo Glock to lift himself into fourth position.

'I was trying to attack Glock in case he might make a mistake but I went slightly wide at the chicane, jumping over the kerb, and when the car landed I lost control and ended up in the barriers,' he said. -- AFP

Alonso's future uncertain
FERNANDO Alonso remains non-committal on his future with Renault despite posting his first victory in a year at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The two-time world champion Spaniard has yet to finalise his plans for 2009, but he is known to be biding his time before deciding what to do.

With no seats remaining available at Ferrari or McLaren Mercedes, he has been linked with a possible move to BMW Sauber, but may yet stay with Renault after breaking his win drought.

Team boss Flavio Briatore insisted the future was still unclear.

'Well, it's not a victory that changes a situation,' the Italian said.

'We have a good relationship with Fernando, we are talking together, and we will be happy with his decision.

'That is all that I can say for the moment.'

Alonso also declined to shed any light on what he might do, denying that he was now beginning to prepare for Renault's 2009 campaign.

'No, I didn't say that,' he said when asked.

'It's not changing the decision for next year. As I've always said, Renault will be my first priority because I feel I'm at home in this team.'

Prior to his win here after starting from 15th on the grid, the 27-year-old had struggled to make an impact this year, with a fourth place his previous best result.

His unexpected victory in an incident-packed night race came as a relief.

'I think I need a couple of days to realise we won a race this year,' he said.

'It seems impossible all through the season to be close to the top guys and here suddenly we have been competitive from Friday. It's fantastic.' -- AFP

FOR Felipe Massa, making a decisive move towards his first world championship will not begin at Sunday's SingTel Singapore Grand Prix race starting grid, but 22 hours earlier during Saturday's qualifying session.
The Ferrari driver, who trails leader Lewis Hamilton of McLaren by a single point, knows that starting from pole position will give him a big edge in Sunday's historic night race.

'Saturday will be very important, for sure,' the Brazilian told The Straits Times yesterday.

'I've never driven on the Singapore track but it'll be even more difficult to overtake compared to Valencia, because the straights are even shorter.'

The 26-year-old, who looked rested at the afternoon interview despite flying in from Paris at 7am yesterday, was referring to last month's European Grand Prix.

When Roger Federer won last year’s US Open in expectedly dominant fashion, the tennis world was on the cusp of unanimously declaring him the Greatest of All Time. Pete Sampras’s Grand Slam record would be smashed, perhaps, by June.

Fast forward not quite a year, and Federer’s stock had crashed with a resounding thud.

Really?

Sure, Federer had shown himself to be vulnerable this year, suffering from mononucleosis early in the season, getting thumped at the French Open, and abdicating his crown at Wimbledon. His forehand suddenly wasn’t as feared. His imperiousness had been punctured by the rise of Rafael Nadal.

How quick we are, though, to predict a star’s fall. All because the Swiss, who had reigned over men’s tennis with a velvety game and an iron hand for much of the last decade, only made it to the finals of two Grand Slams (losing one he’d won five straight years 9-7 in the fifth set) and the semi of the other.

How lackluster! How pedestrian!

Federer’s rule, it was said, was over. He’d dropped to No. 2 and was plummeting, never again to win another Slam.

Not so fast.

In thrashing Andy Murray and capturing his 5th consecutive US Open and 13th Grand Slam, Federer showed us, and perhaps even himself, that we were all much too anxious to write off a player of his ethereal caliber.

Federer is the consummate gentleman champion, seemingly impossible to root against. His artistry is unsurpassed; he does things with a racquet none of us had ever seen before. He glides around the court with a silent, superhuman quality. And he is as graceful off the court as on.

Over the past year, Federer has shown us that he is, after all, human. Instead of consistent displays of impregnable confidence, we saw him grimace and bellow in frustration.

And how lucky we were.

Nadal’s rise and gritty, muscular style of play – which unnerved Federer – was a felicitous counterpoint to Federer’s effortless game and long dominance over the field.

Yet so many of us were quick to revel in Federer’s vulnerability. Was it our want of a true rivalry? Or was it our inability to make sense of perfection? Was Federer too princely for his own good?

In the end, the New York crowd cheered Roger on as never before. His struggles made him more accessible to mere mortals in the cheap seats.

It was exciting to see Federer challenged, forced to respond to his pursuers and search for answers. And it has been thrilling to bear witness – again – to his greatness.

Federer, in staking his continuing claim to the throne, has shown he can turn things around as fast as his forehand can go from defense to offense. Yes, he now shares the pedestal with Nadal. And the challengers are mounting, with Murray and Novak Djokovic demonstrating that they are capable of winning majors on any surface.

As always, Federer has everything in perspective. “I really believe tennis is at a great place right now, with a lot of incredible athletes.”

All is right again, in Roger’s Court.

Federer Seizes History, Captures Fifth in a Row

Roger Federer has made history. By taking the US Open men's title after his 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 6 Andy Murray, Federer became the first man to win five successive titles at two different Grand Slam events (the Open and Wimbledon).
The difference, on paper, between the two players was stark. For Murray, who has only been on the pro circuit for four years, this was his first Grand Slam final. In fact, he had never advanced past a quarterfinal round of any previous Slam. For Federer, it was his 17th Slam final, with 12 titles going into today’s match.

Federer’s biggest challenge this year was not another player, but the mononucleosis that made him ill and not himself for several months and contributed to knocking him out of the No. 1 spot, which he had held for a record 4.5 years.

"I didn't feel like I was moving all that great for the last couple of months," Federer said. "On hard courts, my coordination was missing a little bit."

In fact, the last time Federer had a year without a Grand Slam win was 2002, prior to his first Wimbledon title in 2003.

“This is a very special moment in my career,” said Federer. “To take this one home is incredible. It means the world to me.”

As for Murray, he is focused on the future. “There are so many things I can improve on, and that’s exciting. I hope this will be the start of big things for me.”

While Federer was the crowd favorite, Murray had more than his fair share of supporters, with several people seen sporting kilts in a sign of solidarity for the Scotsman.

The electricity crackled across the court before play even got underway. When Federer opened with an ace, things only accelerated from there. The match clock had barely ticked past one minute before Federer was up 1-0.

While the two stuck for the most part with standard baseline volleying, it wasn’t long before they engaged in some lively net play, as well. Federer had a tremendous amount of success with his cross-court forehand, while Murray’s slice drew gasps from the crowd.

Up 3-2 in the first set, Federer had his first break of the match. Then up 5-2 and with Murray appearing a little rattled, Federer broke for the second time and took the first set. He continued to roll in the second, holding and then breaking again to go up 2-0.

"Today, I think I really chose the right tactics against Andy, who himself is a good tactician," Federer said.

Murray then steadied himself and worked his way back to 2-all. Then, with the fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium encouraging Federer every way they could, he fought back from 0-40 to hold. The game featured a highly questionable shot, which Federer appeared to have hit long, but the linesman called it in. Murray chose not to stop play to challenge, but a television replay showed that the ball had indeed been out.

At 5-5, Murray could not hang on, and Federer put another set in his win column. Whether it was lack of experience, or simply that Federer is still in a league of his own, the third and final set was over practically before it began. Federer went up 5-0, before Murray suddenly came to life, holding his serve and then breaking.

“It was my goal to try to win the tournament,” Murray said later.

But that was not to be this year. At championship point, Federer could clearly be seen yelling, “Come on!” And then as Murray hit the ball into the net, it was a combination of euphoria and relief that crossed Federer’s face, as he fell to the ground and the crowd erupted.

But the match and the stakes it carried were certainly the same, as was Andy Murray’s level of play.

Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Hanna forced the suspension of the men’s semifinal match Saturday in Louis Armstrong Stadium between No. 6 Andy Murray and No. 1 Rafael Nadal early into the third set with Murray up two sets to love but Nadal leading and up a break 3-2 in the third.

Play resumed late Sunday afternoon in Arthur Ashe Stadium on a sunny, windy day, in stark comparison to the cloudy, humid conditions Saturday.

And while Nadal stepped up to his usual level of play Sunday, it was Murray who was the better player over both days and who advanced to play in the US Open final Monday against four-time champion Roger Federer, with a 6-2, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 win over the world No. 1.

It is Murray’s first career appearance in a Grand Slam final, and when the new rankings come out Monday, he will be a career-high No. 4.

“It was very different to yesterday with the completely different court, different conditions,” Murray said. “I think the first time, maybe second time on – since I been on the tour when I've actually had to come back the following day, so that was tough for me.

“The ball was flying through the air a bit more (today),” he added. “I just had to try and stay calm. I thought I was playing well enough to win the match, but I knew Nadal was going to come at me. There was a few sort of ups and downs even though it was a very short time we were out on the court, but I managed to come through in the end.”

During the match Saturday, Murray was outplaying the world No. 1, with two breaks of serve in the opening set, as Nadal was uncharacteristically not sharp with his shots. It was the Scot who came up with bigger shots when needed, with 25 winners alone in the second set.

The second set ended in a tiebreak win for Murray and no breaks yet in the match for the Spaniard. Nadal earned his first break points of the match in the opening game of the third set and earned his first break of the match when Murray hit a shot long. The next four games stayed on serve – with better play from Nadal – and then the rain came, just over two hours into the match.

For Nadal, having the match suspended was actually somewhat beneficial for him as he came out playing Sunday like his usual hard-hitting self.

“For me it was a little bit lucky,” Nadal said of the suspension of the match. “Yesterday I was not playing (well), so today I played a little bit more. Today was a different match. I played with a little bit more energy. Before I don't know where was the energy…He played well.”

“It's difficult, every day to be fresh, so I know one day going to happen something like yesterday,” he added. “Well, wasn't the best moment because it was a semifinals of the US Open, but at the same time never is a good moment…but I'm very happy for everything. I tried my best during all the tournament. I wasn't very fresh during all the tournament. I did semifinals, so very happy for that.”

When play resumed Sunday, the third set remained on serve and Nadal took the set with a winner left to force a fourth.

Nadal then survived a pivotal second game in the fourth. After saving a break point to bring the game to deuce, it went to deuce seven more times before the Spaniard gained the advantage with a Murray shot wide and then finally held when the Scot hit a shot into the net.

Murray had multiple opportunities with seven break-point chances to take the early 2-0 lead. Nadal then broke in the following game to take the 2-1 advantage, but the Scot did not let himself get down.

“He only missed one first serve in those points, so even though I had break chances, he played well on them and I missed a couple of shots that I maybe shouldn't have,” Murray said of the second game. “I thought that, even though I got broken the following game, I still kept my emotions in check. I knew I was going to have chances to get back in the match and I obviously did.”

The fans in Arthur Ashe were treated to a great fourth set of tennis with hard-hitting rallies and crafty shots. Murray evened it up with a break back in the sixth game to make it 3-3.

After Murray hit an ace to close out the ninth game and go up 5-4, still on serve, Nadal took the ball and was up 40-30. But after a fantastic rally featuring hard-hitting groundstrokes from both players, who both showed great movement around the court, the game finally moved to deuce.

A similar rally followed on the next point, which Murray won to gain the advantage with a winner into the empty court after Nadal tracked down a shot to the left corner. With now a break point for match point, Nadal sliced a drop shot that Murray caught up to. He smashed a passing shot right to take the match.

“(The) dropshot, well, I run a lot in the point before,” Nadal said of his shot selection. “I was against wind. The ball was difficult because with the backhand higher, so (there were) not many chances to do.”

“I go on court only with calm,” he said of his feelings during the match. “Just try to fight. I just go and fight as much as I can and go back home knowing I tried everything.”

It is has been a great season so far for Nadal, who won his fourth straight title at Roland Garros, his first Wimbledon title, reached No. 1 in the world for the first time and won the Olympic gold medal in singles. He also won the Olympus US Open Series, and his semifinal appearance in Flushing Meadows also marks his best career performance at the US Open.

The win Sunday continued Murray’s great summer as he finished second in the Olympus US Open Series and won the title in Cincinnati. He has played well against Federer in the past and defeated him earlier this year in Dubai.

But it could not be a better place for Murray to reach his first major final than at his favorite tournament – the US Open – but he is not satisfied quite yet.

“I'm obviously delighted to be in my first Slam final. But, you know, like I said at the start of the tournament, I want to try and win it,” he said. “After playing so well yesterday and everything that went on with the rain and the court changes and stuff, obviously going a break behind in the fourth, it was, you know, almost slipping away slightly. Then to come back in the end, you're relieved that you managed to come through.”

And so, catch Federer and Murray, in his first attempt in a grand slam final at 5am later. Let's declare tomorrow a school holiday!

Now Storied Federer v. Nadal Rivalry Could Revive at US Open

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have contested jaw-dropping finals at Wimbledon and Roland Garros, and took big cuts at each other in Miami when Nadal was still just a babe in the woods.

Nadal, has won major North American hard courts at Indian Wells and Toronto, while Federer - who is perhaps the most capable man ever seen on concrete - has won the US Open four years running and every major North American hard court crown at Indian Wells, Miami, Toronto and Cincinnati.

But the two have never faced off at the US Open and in the last four years, when they have combined to utterly dominate their sport, they really have not even come close to meeting in Queens, as Nadal has come into the tournament injured or tired and has not been able to push past the quarterfinals.

This year could be different, as Nadal will take over the world No. 1 spot the week of August 18, stopping Federer's 236 consecutive weeks and his own 159 consecutive weeks at No. 2. The Spaniard's ascension is completely deserved. Not only has he beaten Federer four consecutive times, including in perhaps the most thrilling final ever at 2008 Wimbledon, but he has won seven of the last nine tournaments he has entered, including Toronto, where he thrashed Nicolas Kiefer in the final.

World No. 3 Novak Djokovic finally put an end to the Herculean man's 32-match win streak in the semifinals of Cincinnati, but as more than few of his top flight foes have said, at his best, Nadal is nearly impossible to hit through these days.

"I was playing incredible, maybe my best set in my life," said world No. 11 Richard Gasquet after a 6-7 (12), 6-2, 6-1 loss to Nadal in Toronto. "But you have to win two sets to beat him. He never misses. He's like that all the match. You have to play so aggressive...He's the best player in the world for me, and it will be really hard for one player to beat him."

Nadal leads his head to head with Federer 12-6, but Federer has won three out of their five meetings on hardcourts, including a rapid 6-4, 6-1 victory at the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup. But that was the last time that the Swiss beat the Spaniard and now, despite the fact that three out of their last four clashes have been contested on Nadal's beloved clay, it is clear that the Spaniard owns a substantial mental edge over his rival.

While Federer has been searching for reasons why he has only won two small titles this year, Nadal has been racking up crown after crown despite a brutal schedule.

"This and the U.S. Open is the last big fight," Nadal said during the Olympics.

Due to his spectacular, heady and rarely nervous play from 2004-2007, few analysts thought coming into this year that the Federer Freight train would be significantly slowed. He had rung up an incredible 12 Glam titles at the age of 26 after winning the 2007 US Open by out-toughing Djokovic in the final.

But a bad case of mononucleosis slowed Federer in December and although he produced a couple of remarkable wins at the Australian Open, Djokovic wore him down in the semifinals and since then, he has been vulnerable to many different styles of players.

Since March, he has taken loses to an attacking Mardy Fish, the wily Radek Stepanek, the rising Frenchman Gilles Simon and service bomber Ivo Karlovic.

"It's important to stay positive," Federer said. "It's not the end of the world. [But] Rafa deserves the credit, because first he had to defend his No. 2 ranking against Djokovic in Hamburg. Since then he has been on a winning streak. But if he would have lost that semifinal he would be No. 3 in the world, which now looks crazy, right?"

Four-time US Open champion John McEnroe, who knows a little bit about major rivalries having battled the legendary likes of Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl in classic matches in New York, said that it is now foolhardy to see Federer as an automatic to break all-time Grand Slam title holder Pete Sampras’ record of 14 majors.

"Let's put it this way, Pete's sleeping a little better than he was about five months ago," McEnroe said. "He's thinking, 'Maybe I actually have a chance to hold on to this thing.' It is not out of the question that 14 are going to be enough. It's not going to be as easy to just mow through it the way most of us thought.”

"Pete talked about 17, 18, and I thought [Federer] was going to get it, but you always hit that spot when it starts to get tougher," he added. "When Pete hit 14 I thought, 'God who's going to get there?', and it's pretty amazing that Roger has gotten so close. Roger is 27 (today) and how many did Pete win after 27? It doesn't get any easier. No one, Roger, Pete -- he had an incredible run too -- you can't keep it up. Sooner or later the law of averages catches up."

Three of Sampras' wins came after he turned 27 - two Wimbledons and his grand finale, the 2002 US Open title. Sampras turned 27 in August of 1998, while Federer just turned 27 a few days ago.

At the 1998 US Open, Sampras fell to the hard-charging serve and volleyer Pat Rafter in the semis and although he would reach the final three more times, he fell to two youngsters, Marat Safin in 2000 and Lleyton Hewitt in 2001, before he pulled off his most notable run ever and beat his closest rival, Andre Agassi, in the 2002 final.

Federer can hear the footsteps of the youngsters, too, having lost to every member of the swaggering 21 to 22-year-old club this season: Nadal, Djokovic and Cincinnati champ Andy Murray of Great Britain.

But Federer's friend, Slovak player Dominic Hrbaty, told Reuters he believes that the Swiss will return to the top spot.

"Roger is going to be more relaxed, there is less pressure on him. I don't say he will come back in one or two weeks but for sure he will get back to No. 1,” Hrbaty said. “There was huge pressure on him to win Wimbledon, then to stay No. 1. Nobody else had to experience that kind of pressure. There will be more pressure on Rafa now."

Nadal has yet to show that the pressure is getting to him in any fashion. However, he was unable to go back to back at Toronto and Cincinnati and was visibly tired in his loss to Djokovic. If he is to make a deep push at the US Open, he has to make sure not to exhaust himself in Beijing.

What that means is that the Spaniard is going to have to play extremely offensive tennis in an attempt to shorten points. While he is without question the most formidable defensive player in the world, it is long rallies on hot cement that can eventually take his legs from under him.

"He's definitely doing a lot of things better than he was in the past," Murray said of Nadal. "I think he's moving better on hard courts, and he's changing the pace of the ball a little more and not playing so far behind the baseline. He's hitting the ball a bit harder and trying to serve bigger."

Federer and Nadal have met four times in Paris and three times at Wimbledon, but never in Melbourne and New York. Even though many of the fans in attendance at the US Open will be pulling for an American to win the title, few would be dissatisfied with watching Federer's hard court wizardry match up against Nadal's all-out blitzes in the final.

"Our rivalry is great for tennis right now. I think we've played each other 16 times and given our ages ... we will probably play another 20 times," Federer said. "We are very different characters but it is on the fair play side. I think we will leave our mark on the sport."

Sharing Phelps' dream of a perfect score

BEIJING: The Water Cube is silent. The waters still. The scoreboard blank. The dream done. Michael has gone.
A champion has departed but he has left us fulfilled. Almost every morning, through nine days, I have arrived at this pool, collected the race schedule, climbed to the top stands of the Water Cube and watched a man chase his dream.

If genius could be explained,
it would take some of the mystery out of it. It would make it seem common. It seems fitting that forever we will look back at Michael Phelps and ask: How?
Always when he won, and always he won, I was on my feet. Michael does that to people, he moves them. He is an American, with a sad haircut, I do not know him, but it seemed impossible not to get involved with his dream.

To chase eight golds was not arrogance, it was simply desperately brave. If he failed, so be it, but he was willing to try. History anyway is never made by the faint-hearted.

What happens when we watch sport? We are thrilled, inspired, impressed, entertained. But with Phelps, unusual emotions came into play: We were grateful, we were humbled. Mainly because he let us be witness to something we have never seen before. Or possibly again.

Phelps fascinated us, he forced us to look at him, with those boy's hips, a stevedore's shoulders, arms like cables, stumpy legs, flipper feet, no hair, a physique so strange it's almost like a human jigsaw puzzle gone wrong.

We liked him because he seemed unaffected, never shirking a press conference, sitting there, face long, mouth open, tiredness collecting at the corners of his lips, never complaining, never boasting, never sounding bored.

Once a Chinese journalist asked him the world's longest question, Phelps couldn't hear the translation, chaos ensued, other journalists wanted to move on, but he waited, another translation was made, he answered.

Champions are not judged on decency, but it is just pleasing when they are unaffected by their own heroics. Throughout the nine days, Phelps explained his goal as raising swimming's profile, of altering its status as a four-yearly sport.

Yesterday, he revealed, friends had told him 'it's crazy' in the US, that on television the swimming is always on. Actually it is he who is always on, he who America watches, but he didn't say it. It was a nice touch.

We liked him, this revolutionary, because there is something pure to him, even noble, an athlete blanking out everything for nine days, just simply and singularly fixated on his dream.

How did he get up so early, find energy, push himself, not go out (movies and sleep is all he did), see his mother for only 30 seconds, manage his emotions, and then summon his best every time?

Maybe, we will never know. I don't want to know. Because something so extraordinary, so beautiful, should just be enjoyed not completely understood.

If genius could be explained, it would take some of the mystery out of it. It would make it seem common. It seems fitting that forever we will look back at Michael Phelps and ask: How?

These Games are not over, but these Games belong to Phelps. Even if a swimmer, under two caps, behind goggles, obscured in the water, seems an unlikely athletic god.

Some believe he should say farewell. Eight gold is his measuring tape and eight gold is unbeatable. Of course, that's what we said about seven.

But Phelps will swim on, and should swim on. He has to compete in next year's World Championships because his mum has never seen Rome, he grinned, and she wants to. And he's an obedient boy.

He has to keep swimming because he wants more people to go swimming, watch swimming and he's not close to his goal yet.

He has to keep swimming because he still hasn't discovered how far his talent extends, he wants to try new events, perhaps the sprints. And anyone who has seen him this week, do they want to say stop to this man?

Towards the end of his final press conference yesterday, a journalist mentioned that we had heard everyone's view on him, but what did Michael Phelps think of Michael Phelps.

He grinned. He paused. He said: 'I'm lucky to have everything I have. I am lucky to have the talent, the drive, the want, the excitement about sport. I am fortunate for every quality I have.'

He got up. People clapped. He slid his lanky body through the throng, adjusted his cap and strolled away. Just a man searching for a new dream.

One man and a whole world of dreams.

Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay: Phelps wins record eighth gold

BEIJING, August 17) -- Michael Phelps won his record eighth gold medal in the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay final on Sunday but this time needed some help from his friends.

The US team of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Jason Lezak and Phelps won at the National Aquatics Center in a time of 3:29.34 and in doing so broke the world record by 1.34 seconds.

The defending Olympic champions and world record holders led from start to finish.

Peirsol gave them a great start with a 53.16sec split. Hansen increased the lead on the world record split taking it 0.88 seconds under at the race's halfway mark. Brenton Rickard swam his breaststroke leg in 58.56, faster than Hansen, to bring the Australians into second place.

Phelps fought off the Australian challenge in the Butterfly leg before Lezak kept Eamon Sullivan on his shoulder until the wall.

The Australian team of Hayden Stoeckel, Andrew Lauterstein, Rickard and Sullivan finished 0.70 seconds behind the US to win silver in an Oceania record 3:30.04, also under the old world record.

Australia went into the race as world champions but only as beneficiaries of a US disqualification at the 2007 world championships.

Japan's team of Miyashita Junichi, Kitajima Kosuke, Fujii Takuro and Sato Hisayoshi took bronze in an Asian record 3:31.18.

Russia finished fourth in a European record 3:31.92.

"I don't know what to feel right now, there are so many emotions going through my head and so much excitement, I guess I just want to see my mom," Phelps said.

"It's a beautiful thing, I am so proud to be a part of this relay team," Peirsol said.

"It wasn't like we were doing this for Michael, but it's an honor to be part of it. It would have been something if we hadn't done it."

"I have been fairly speechless since the relay," Phelps said. "This is all a dream come true, just to be able to imagine anything, to go through the ups and downs and accomplish everything you ever dreamed of."

"I was really nervous going into this, because anything can happen in one race," admitted Lezak, who had saved Phelps's bid for history with his unlikely surge past France's Alain Bernard on the final leg of the 4x100m free relay on Monday.
"I wanted to take it out hard and hold on as long as I could. I never thought I'd catch Bernard, so I knew the same thing could happen to me."

Federer's Gold

BEIJING (AP) -- Roger Federer extended his arms in triumph and began to hop. Then he embraced his doubles partner and they hopped together.

Federer had waited awhile for a big victory to celebrate, and when the chance came he was ready. He added a gold medal to his extensive trophy collection by teaming with Stanislas Wawrinka to win the Olympic doubles Saturday.

The Swiss duo beat Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

For Federer the victory was a moment to savor in a frustrating year. He lost in the quarterfinals of Olympic singles, his Grand Slam total has been stalled at 12 since last September, and his 4½-year reign atop the rankings will end Monday when Rafael Nadal becomes No. 1.

But he's now a medalist for the first time in his three Olympics.

He played damn well today.

Men's 100m Butterfly: Phelps steps closer with seventh gold

(BEIJING, August 16) -- American Michael Phelps overcame the one man left in the field of challengers who could have stopped his charge towards eight gold medals in the Men's 100m Butterfly on Saturday at the National Aquatics Center.

Defending Olympic champion and world champion Phelps, who had qualified second fastest for the final, realized at the 50m mark he had a huge battle on his hands when Serbian Milorad Cavic touched first, 0.09 seconds under the world record.

Phelps and Cavic battled it out in the last 50m. A monumental upset looked to be approaching - until Phelps dug deep and out-touched Cavic on the wall.

Phelps won in an Olympic record time of 50.58, to take his tally of gold medals to seven, but only just, and by the slimmest of margins - 0.01 seconds.

Milorad Cavic said after the semifinals he could beat Phelps after qualifying fastest for the final, but finished with the silver medal in a time of 50.59.

Australia's Andrew Lauterstein capped a great series of swims in the heats and semifinals to win the bronze medal in 51.12.

But world record holder Ian Crocker (USA), who has been breathing down Phelps' neck this year with some threatening times, only arrived in fourth place with a time of 51.13.

Men's 200m Individual Medley: Phelps chalks up sixth gold

(BEIJING, August 15) -- Michael Phelps continued his attack on winning a record eight gold medals on Friday pocketing his sixth at the National Aquatics Center, this time in the 200m Individual Medley.

He swam yet another world record, saving 0.57 seconds off the mark he set at the US trials in July this year.

Phelps was never in trouble and led comfortably throughout, touching the wall in 1:54.23.

The field stayed with Phelps during the Backstroke and Butterfly legs but the defending Olympic champion took the lead during the Breaststroke leg and pulled away in the final 50 meters of Freestyle.

Phelps has dominated every event he has entered, including the 400m Individual Medley.

Hungarian Laszlo Cseh put in another great performance, again edging out Phelps' teammate Ryan Lochte to win the silver medal in a European record time of 1:56.52.

Cseh now has a pair of silver medals from the Individual Medley events after finishing second to Phelps in Sunday's Men's 400m Individual Medley.

With only 10 minutes to recover after winning the gold in the 200m Backstroke, Lochte could only manage the bronze medal in a time of 1:56.53, just one hundredth of a second behind Cseh.

Lochte now has a pair of bronze medals in the Individual Medley events after finishing third in Sunday's 400m Individual Medley.

(BEIJING, August 13) -- The US Men's 4 x 200m Freestyle team, led out by the indomitable Michael Phelps, smashed the world record on the way to winning the gold medal on Wednesday.

The triumph keeps alive Phelps' dream of gathering a record eight golds at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The win also brings Phelps his 11th career Olympic gold to date.

The US team of Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay led for the entire race and stretched the world record margin throughout the race.

Lochte followed Phelps' lead-off leg and established command under the world record time by 3.63 seconds. Berens slightly increased this lead, handing over to Vanderkaay to anchor the relay home and extend their lead on the world record. They smashed the world record, shaving off 4.68 seconds to break the seven-minute barrier at 6:58.56.

US and Russia fought out the first 200m, with Australia's Grant Hackett edging the Russians out for second place at the 400m mark. Canada enjoyed a great third leg through Brent Hayden, to give them second place behind the US at the 600m mark.

Russia's Alexander Sukhorukov swam a fast final 200m to move past Canada and grab the silver medal in 7:03.70 which was also under the old Olympic record.

Australia, through Nick Ffrost, also overhauled the Canadians to take the Bronze medal in 7:04.98.
